I'm a Honda guy. I've always driven, and liked Hondas. Now that I've had a bit of exposure to other cars, with V8, v6, diesels, and non Honda 4 bangers, I have come to the conclusion that I love high revs.
GSR tach
I like driving my brother in laws, 02 TDI, but I miss the build up, and the excitement of a "rev happy" engine. The smooth pull of a trouqey motor like a V* or a diesel is great, but it just doesn't appeal to me as much.
We have joked about how my car is only fun in a rev range that doesn't even exist for his engine. And after doing a few 1st and 2nd gear pulls today I can say it really is true.
My 01 Civic's redline is 6700rpm, (not that high) and if I'm going hard I usually shift right after 6500. because of the VTEC and what not my car is a couch potato before 4500 rmp, but when it hits that mark it starts to wake up, and by 5500 shes happy as could be.
.
There is just something so great about an engine that loves to rev.
Also I miss my GSR. and I want an S2000

I drive a TDI (a bit newer than your brother in-law's) occasionally, and I agree with you entirely, the rev range is so short.

High revs keep you alive!

You can always have a cross-plane crank for smoother torque - something these Hondas lack.

they do make me smile. actually they make me giggle like a school girl

Have you driven a car with an 8000+ RPM redline? If not then you'll be giggling like a schoolgirl for weeks once you do!

but if you cut off that second "muffler"(the only mod my brother in law has done so far, well that and a Audi tt short trow shifter :) ) you get turbo choo-ing sounds and those are great too.

I love high revving engines, such as the RX-8's rotary.
I also love lazy engines with low redlines though.

Hearing people pull away in high revving sports bikes compared to the usual choppers I hear made me realize the same.

I too like high revs. I blame years of riding two stroke Honda dirt bikes. (Currently have a CR125R)

It does kind of suck when trying to lug extra passengers around though. I did consider selling everything for a practical and torquey V6 sedan, but eh .. I'm not that old yet, or at least I refuse to believe I am.

I can hear the turbo flutter slightly when lifting off, and a bit of air being pulled in when coasting. It is a newer model, with the PD engine (also used in the 5th gen), while your brother in law has the ALH in his.

I'd like an S2000. I would really like to have another 2000 EK, preferably an EK9. But I'll take my GA5 and be happy I have a Honda at all (or a car for that matter). This is the first non-company, fully owned by me car I've owned in almost a decade.

and the little bit i think I know about TDIs tell me the ALH is better for moding. My step mother in law ha an 03 TDI Golf that is auto and has the muffler, and resonator/muffler, and yeah you can veeeery faintly here the turbo flutter if you rev to 2000-2500 in first and let off really quick. But with the resonator gone, and a stick it's A LOT louder.

Yes it does most people find a car's engine making noise to be scary, and disturbing. And you get so used to it. I remember when my wife and were dating, and for some reason I had to drive her car. I gave it a little gas and she was like "becarefull, you went over 4 on the rmp thing." I was like "aaaaaaaaaaaaand?" She has a 01 Cavalier and it really does sounds like it's in pain at anything over 4000rpm.

I'm definitely a Honda guy at heart which is a comment that my non-jalop friends always scoff at due to my current and past selection of autos. My first car ever was an 89 Accord with flip up lights and the lovely A20 that loved to rev. It was replaced by an 03 Matrix XRS with the 2ZZ-GE which embodied the soul of a Honda motor with its 8200rpm redline and VTAKKKK style VVLT-i kick at 6200rpm.
Although it was Honda-esque I missed the badge and picked up a CBR600 with a 13,500 rpm redline. Wow, was that thing ever fun to redline!!!
Anyway, years gone by and now I oddly find myself with a Coyote mustang that is tuned to rev to 7800 rpm and advance timing everywhere. I find it slightly ironic that I picked this car because the engine is so Honda-like (but with torque) yet this was the nemesis car in all of the Max-Boost comics that I loved so dearly.
I'll always love Honda's ingenuity with tech such as VTEC, SH-AWD, 4 wheel steering and the new IMA, but I sure hope they can put together some more well built, cheap, reliable but most importantly fun cars!

REVS ARE FUN! I used to feel a bit guilty when I revved enough to engage VTEC because my otherwise logical friends couldn't reconcile the noise with the legal speeds.
But then I took it past six grand on an empty mountain road in third. 80 mph at north of six grand. That had to be the best noise I've ever heard.

My older Brother had a 89 Accord. It was the first cat I actually drive like on a real road. I was 13 at the time I think. Even being an automatic it was fun.

My GSR had 2.5 inch exhaust(it was lik that when I got it). That engine with a free flowing exhaust at more then 7500 rpm was just so freaking bad ass.

Man... I feel the opposite.
I love high revving engines as much as the next guy, but I was kind of turned off to it on a daily driver after driving an FR-S. You have to wind it out so much to get any really power, and in every day driving you really have to go out of your way to hit that point. Anything under that is just uninspiring due to the utter lack of torque in the low end with these engines.
That's why driving the ST twins felt so right. Full torque at just over 2k RPM is awesome for a fun daily driver. If I had a dedicated track car, I would pick a high revving engine any day of the week, but for everyday fun you just can't match a torquey V8 or a good turbo.
Now I'm just waiting to mod my Focus ST. People are reliably hitting ~350lbs of torque with just bolt ons. That's fucking nuts!

Ever driven a vvti-l celica? It's like if vtec changeover wasn't smooth. There's a slight pause and then everything changes and goes crazy for a couple thousand rpm. It made for bad acceleration times and driveability but exciting driving characteristics. Kinda like a car with lots of turbo lag.
I've never driven an rx8, but they rev to 9k. Bet that's fun.

High revs, you say? My FZ6 doesn't redline until 14k, and 8-10k is right about the sweet spot ;)

I know that everyone hates on large exhausts on Honda's but when you're young they can be pretty awesome and you can put up with all the drone and everything else. My first, second and third car modding experience ever was to my buddy's 97 Civic SI (Canadian model so D16). We were in High School and had no idea what we were doing but somehow managed to get his AEM intake and OBX front strut tower bar installed. The third mod we took to a local shop but we got a full cat back magnaflow exhaust put on. That was a really fun car and just before the Fast and Furious days!
In regards to high revving Honda's, sometimes it really is more fun to drive a slower car fast than a faster car slow. We had a Type-S DC5 for my wife a few years back and that thing was just like the old GSR's... Super Rev Happy and very responsive! I threw some 245 Hankook V12's on there and a thick RSB and you could throw it around corners!! I sometimes miss that car when I drive my Mustang as although I have almost the same number of rev's available, the car just feels too heavy and not as toss able, and using those revs gets me into trouble really quick.
After this post I think I need a Honda in my life again. When my uncle gets rid of his old CBX1050 (which is another quirky Honda with an inline 6 stuffed transversely in a motorbike) I'll be sure to give it a good home!
